Global Speakers Series: Empowering Communities in Nepal

Ramachhap (Suresh)Thursday, March 14th, 2013

7:00pm – 8:30pm

Desert Gardens Community Centre (Cactus Room), 540 Seymour Street, Kamloops

The Kamloops Global Awareness Network invites all Kamloopsians to attend Empowering Communities in Nepal, the third international guest speaker presentation of the Global Speakers Series, at 7:00pm on Thursday, March 14th at Desert Gardens Community Centre.  The Global Speakers Series aims to bring international speakers from various countries to Kamloops to discuss international development projects around the globe.

The presentation will be delivered by Suresh Shrestha, executive director of Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) and World Neighbours Canada partner NGO in Nepal.

Mr. Shrestha will be speaking mainly on the World Neighbours Canada/Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti partnership project that has been ongoing for the past 20 years, to develop water systems for small villages in the province of Ramechhap, Nepal. In the past decade, the project has expanded to also include improving sanitation systems and to providing smokeless cooking stoves.

The impact these projects have had on village life is incredible, particularly for women. Having clean water close at hand has improved not only the daily routine of gathering water, a woman’s responsibility, but their health as well. Because they don’t have to carry heavy water jugs for hours each day, their health has improved dramatically. They have more time for other productive activities. Because of the nature of how TSS works, the villagers learn how to build and maintain the new systems. As a result there is enormous pride in each villager’s ownership of the projects. Every system built over the past 20 years is still working in all the villages.

Mr. Shreshtha will speak for about 30 minutes followed by a question and answer period. There will also be information available about KGAN Network Member, World Neighbours Canada.

This is a free, all ages community event. There will be coffee, tea, and cookies provided. Doors open at 6:45pm. RSVP is recommended and can be done by clicking the Eventbrite link below.
